Do You Want To Get Rid Of Spiritual Depression?

I try to warn our people over and over to be cautious of any magic bullets that might be offered to them. You know what those are right? They are teachings of certain books and articles and sermons that promise a once-for-all rememdy for our marriage, how we raise our children, how we handle money etc. The Christian life is an on going war, not a one time battle. Though Jesus has paid the penalty for sin and broken the power of sin, the presence of sin still remains and we are to wage war on it (Colossians 3:5).

With that said, I do want to offer something to you from Martyn-Lloyd Jones that, though not a magic bullet, is certainly powerful amunition that we can use over and over in our lives. He says,

"Would you like to get rid of this spiritual depression? The first think you have to do is say farewell now once and forever to your past. Realize that it has been covered and blotted out in Christ. Never look back at your sins again. Say: "It is finished, it is covered by the Blood of Christ." That is your first step. Take that and finish yourself and all this talk about goodness, and look to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is only then that true happiness and joy are possible for you. What you need is not to make resolutions to live a better life, to start fasting and sweating and praying. No! you just begin to say:

I rest my faith on Him alone

Who died for my transgressions to atone

Take that first step and you will find that immediately you will begin to experience a joy and a release that you have never known in your life." (Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Spiritual Depression, 35)

Love ya,

Pastor Greg
